Growing up in Canada, I've always loved going to the movies. Grabbing popcorn, and enjoying a cinematic experience with others. As I've gotten older I've seen fewer indie theatres in my neck of the woods, and more Cineplex Theatres pop up. I've never really given it much thought, until I read up on this petition for preventing Cineplex's unethical (and possibly illegal) business practices, thanks to The Rio Theatre.
The fact that a big corporation like Cineplex prevents smaller theatres from showing the latest releases by threatening distributers to not show newer movies at any of their locations is not right at all. I want a level playing field where it's a win-win for both movie-goers and theatres, especially independently owned theatres. It doesn't matter who you are, you still have to go by the book regardless, and it's not fair to let Cineplex to get away with bullying other theatres.
If you're a movie-goer/lover like me, or know someone who is, please read up on this, sign the petition and share as soon as you can. I may be pretty much forced into choosing a Cineplex in my area for the newest movie, but I want Cineplex to play by the rules and give Indie Theatres a chance to show any movie they want.
